Uganda's Obongi Ferry Experiences Traffic Boom as Laropi Ferry Under Maintenance
The temporary suspension of the MV Laropi Ferry, a vital link between Moyo and Adjumani Districts, has led to a significant surge in traffic on the Obongi route, according to local officials. This unexpected shift has sparked curiosity and concern among residents and businesses alike.
Obongi Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Samuel Mpibaza Hashaka, who closely monitored the Obongi Ferry's operations, noted a substantial increase in passenger and vehicle traffic. By 6 pm, 428 passengers had crossed, a notable rise from the usual 259 to 300 daily. Similarly, 67 vehicles crossed, compared to the regular 48.
Hashaka expressed gratitude to the government for providing free services to the people, a gesture that has been well-received.
The Ministry of Works and Transport announced that the MV Laropi Ferry will remain out of service until November 28, 2025, to allow technical teams to conduct critical maintenance aimed at enhancing reliability and safety. This decision has prompted travelers to seek alternative routes, including the Obongi route, or overland routes connecting Moyo, Adjumani, and surrounding districts.
Permanent Secretary Bageya Waiswa, in a communication to Moyo District authorities, assured the public that the government is committed to providing adequate, safe, and well-maintained transport infrastructure. The notice emphasized the temporary nature of the suspension, promising that normal operations would resume on November 28, 2025.
However, residents and business operators have expressed concerns over the closure. Mary Tarapkwe, a businesswoman in Adjumani, urged the government to expedite the construction of the Laropi Bridge, emphasizing the significant inconveniences caused by the ferry's suspension. She highlighted the impact on both people and goods, advocating for swift bridge construction to ease future movement.
Despite the surge in traffic, RDC Hashaka assured the public that the Obongi Ferry continues to operate smoothly, with authorities closely monitoring the situation to ensure safety and efficiency. This proactive approach aims to mitigate any potential issues and maintain the smooth flow of transportation in the region.
