A Tale of Two Arenas
Jarry, the 30-year-old goaltender, finds himself in a unique situation. Standing in an empty hotel ballroom, just a stone's throw away from the arena where he spent his first decade in the NHL, he's about to face his former team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, as a member of the Edmonton Oilers.
But here's where it gets controversial... Jarry, who was once considered the heir apparent to Pittsburgh's Stanley Cup-winning goalie, Matt Murray, is now on the other side of the ice. And the question on everyone's mind is: how will he be received?
"It's going to be very weird," Jarry admits. "A whole new setting."
Jarry made his debut with the Oilers just a day after the trade, showcasing his skills with 25 saves in a win against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Talking about his first game, he says, "It felt like my first game in the NHL all over again."
And this is the part most people miss... Jarry's journey hasn't been without its challenges. After a difficult 2024-25 season, where he even had to spend time in the AHL, he made a choice to turn things around. "I think there was a choice to be made... to pack it in or to be better. I chose the latter, and I'm glad I did."
The Oilers, who have been to the Stanley Cup Final the past two seasons, saw something special in Jarry. They needed a goalie, and Jarry's determination and talent were enticing.
"They're a tight group, just like Pittsburgh," Jarry says of his new team. "The successful teams are tight, and that's what we have here in Edmonton. I'm excited to be a part of it."
As for his return to Pittsburgh, Jarry is curious about the reception. "You never know. I hope in a good way. I gave my all to that team, and I hope they understand that."
Statistically, Jarry ranks highly among Pittsburgh's goalies with at least 100 appearances. He's third in games played, third in GAA, and fourth in save percentage.
But here's the twist... Jarry's success in the regular season hasn't quite translated to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, where he has a record of 2-6.
As the game approaches, the anticipation builds. Will Jarry don a new mask for this homecoming? "I'm not sure. Everything is happening so quick. I'll find out tomorrow," he says with a smirk.
