Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Parts of Western Australia brace for large hailstones and potential flash flooding.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Kalgoorlie, Merredin, Northam, Corrigin, Hyden, Southern Cross, and Harvey. Residents in these areas are advised to take immediate action to ensure their safety.
The warning states that a trough extending from the Lower West to the Interior is triggering severe thunderstorms in a moist and unstable environment. Thunderstorm activity is expected to shift progressively southeastwards during the day, following the movement of the low and trough.
Emergency services advise people in the affected areas to prepare for heavy rainfall, which could lead to flash flooding and isolation. They recommend having essential supplies like canned food, water, medications, and baby supplies for at least five to seven days. Additionally, ensure important documents are safe and your vehicle has a full tank.
During the storm, follow these safety guidelines:
- Seek shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains, and streams if you're outdoors.
- Close curtains and blinds, and stay indoors, keeping away from windows.
- Unplug electrical appliances and avoid using landline telephones during lightning.
- Create sandbags using pillowcases filled with sand to protect your home from flooding.
- If boating, swimming, or surfing, leave the water immediately.
- Avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current.
- Slow down and turn on your headlights.
- Be alert for road hazards like fallen power lines and debris.
- If heavy rain reduces visibility, pull over and park with hazard lights on until the rain clears.
