The largest dataset of human biology-based models has been launched, marking a significant milestone in human-centric research. The European Union's Joint Research Centre (JRC) has compiled the Biomedical models Hub (BimmoH), a comprehensive public database containing scientific articles that utilize human biology-based models in biomedical research. This initiative aligns with the EU's commitment to theStrategy for European Life Sciences, which aims to foster innovation in biotechnology while reducing animal testing. By consolidating information on human biology-based models, BimmoH empowers researchers to design more relevant studies and enhance the translatability of biomedical research. This development is a pivotal moment in promoting innovative research methodologies, making these models more accessible and encouraging widespread adoption. Developed as part of an European Parliament Pilot Project, BimmoH leverages AI to sift through millions of scientific papers, identifying and organizing references to human biology-based models. Scientists can now easily access hundreds of thousands of curated resources, saving time and enabling faster breakthroughs. Regular updates will ensure the database stays up to date with the latest advancements in biomedical research. The impact of BimmoH extends beyond labs. Regulators, policymakers, funding bodies, and industry leaders can use the dataset to inform decisions, from exploratory science to drug development to safety assessments. For example, pharmaceutical companies might use it to test new medicines on human-relevant models, accelerating and improving outcomes. At the same time, in line with the EU's aim to phase out animal testing, the dataset supports the Three Rs principle (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement of animal use in research), a key priority for EU animal welfare policies.
