On December 14, 2025, around 7:30 p.m., diners at the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, were in for a shock. A raccoon plummeted through a roof tile, landing right in the middle of their dinner experience. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, part of the USA TODAY Network, the animal caused quite a stir before officers from the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office arrived. By then, one brave—or perhaps overly curious—patron had already tried to catch the raccoon, only to be bitten in the process. Lt. Pete Krueger later remarked, ‘One of the patrons tried to catch the raccoon, and he was the one that got bit.’
But here’s the part most people miss: By the time authorities arrived, the raccoon had been contained in a room, where animal control swiftly removed it from the property. Krueger described the incident as ‘unique and kind of funny,’ but it raises questions about how wildlife can infiltrate even the most secure spaces. This Wisconsin incident isn’t an isolated one. Just last month, a raccoon in Virginia made headlines for a completely different reason. On November 29, 2025, a raccoon broke into an ABC liquor store in Ashland, Virginia, during the early morning hours. After rummaging through shelves, the critter found its way to the bathroom, where it passed out—intoxicated. The Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter shared a lighthearted statement on Facebook, noting that the raccoon was ‘maybe suffering from a hangover and poor life choices.’ After a few hours of rest and a clean bill of health, the raccoon was released back into the wild.
But here’s the controversial question: Should wildlife be held accountable for their ‘poor life choices,’ or is it our responsibility to ensure such incidents don’t happen in the first place?
