Pharmacy First: Tackling Antimicrobial Resistance in the UK (2025)

Antibiotic Resistance: A Growing Concern and the Role of Pharmacies

A Wake-Up Call for Antibiotic Stewardship

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has released a report on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) that includes a significant development - the integration of Pharmacy First data for the first time. This report, published in November 2025, sheds light on the evolving landscape of antibiotic use and resistance in the UK.

But here's where it gets controversial... While NHS antibiotic prescribing levels have decreased since pre-pandemic times, private dispensing in community pharmacies has skyrocketed, more than doubling since 2019. This shift has contributed to an overall increase in primary care antibiotic use, with a notable rise in private prescriptions.

And this is the part most people miss... The report also reveals a concerning trend: antibiotic-resistant infections have surged by 13% between 2019 and 2024, with nearly 400 cases reported weekly in 2024. This increase is a stark reminder of the urgent need for action.

The data further highlights a disparity in antibiotic-resistant infections, with those living in the most deprived communities experiencing a 47% higher rate of resistant bacteraemia compared to their least deprived counterparts.

Diane Ashiru-Oredope, lead pharmacist for healthcare-associated infections and AMR at the UKHSA, emphasizes the crucial role of pharmacy professionals in tackling AMR. She states, "Pharmacy professionals are essential partners in managing infections and ensuring appropriate antibiotic use, whether through prescribing, issuing, or screening prescriptions."

Ashiru-Oredope also highlights the upcoming "Keep Antibiotics Working" campaign, which aims to educate the public about the responsible use of antibiotics and the importance of safe medicine disposal.

Addressing the disparity in antibiotic-resistant infections, Ashiru-Oredope acknowledges that broader issues may contribute to these inequalities. However, she emphasizes the need for targeted actions to support vulnerable groups. The UKHSA, in collaboration with NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care, is developing a national action plan to address AMR health inequalities.

To tackle this issue effectively, the UKHSA plans to enhance its data collection and analysis, focusing on the disparities in antibiotic resistance. This approach will enable them to identify areas that require immediate attention and develop targeted interventions.

So, what's next? The UKHSA will continue to lead the charge against AMR, working closely with healthcare professionals to develop practical tools and strategies. But here's the million-dollar question: How can we ensure that antibiotics remain effective for future generations? Join the conversation and share your thoughts in the comments below!
