'Rats owned the sidewalks', exclaims Carol Morrison, a member of the District 35 Rat Task Force. She describes how, before the previous rat czar took office, the situation was dire, with rats taking over the streets and playgrounds. The residents' frustration is palpable, as they feel their voices have gone unheard.

Despite the efforts of the former rat czar, Kathleen Corradi, who implemented new initiatives and even joined night walks to assess the issue, the problem persists. Morrison argues that without a dedicated point person, the city's agencies lack coordination, leading to a void in addressing the rat swarms.
And this is the part most people miss: While the Department of Sanitation claims their strategies are working, with a decrease in rat sightings, residents like Morrison argue that the issue is far from resolved. They fear a potential surge in rat populations come springtime if no action is taken.
The letter penned by the resident groups highlights the need for an interagency approach, stating, "Without it, our beloved city faces a rat infestation that will only worsen, jeopardizing our quality of life and health."
