The highly anticipated game between the New York Rangers and the Florida Panthers is set to be a true outdoor spectacle, but here's where it gets controversial... will it even feel like a winter classic with the warm Miami temperatures?
NHL officials have been hard at work, ensuring this event is a success despite the unique challenges. They've learned from past experiences, staging 43 outdoor games in various conditions, and are confident they can deliver an exceptional game.
On Tuesday night, a test run was conducted at loanDepot park, the usual home of the Miami Marlins. The sliding glass panels in left field opened, revealing the stunning Miami skyline, and the retractable roof followed, pulling back to expose the field. The temperature remained steady, and the only casualties were a few decorative flamingos!
"We're in a pretty good spot," said Dean Matsuzaki, NHL executive vice president of events. "A few minor adjustments, and we're ready to go."
But here's the part most people miss... the NHL has been keeping the roof closed and the air conditioning cranked up during the day to maintain an ideal temperature for ice-making. It's a delicate balance, and the League is taking no chances.
"We've got two Mobile Refrigeration Units running at 50% capacity, and the ice crew is prepared for any scenario," explained Derek King, NHL vice president of hockey operations.
The test run was a success, and the NHL is now ready to open the roof for the big game on Friday. With temperatures expected to be similar, the record for the warmest NHL outdoor game may not be broken.
"It's an outdoor game, and we're excited to deliver an authentic experience," King added.
