Ghana's Number Plate Debate: VEMAG vs DVLA - What's the Holdup? (2026)

Ghana's Number Plate Debate: A Call for Pause and Transparency

In a bold move, the Vehicle Embossment Association of Ghana (VEMAG) has urged the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to hit the brakes on their planned digital number plate rollout, scheduled for January 2026. But here's where it gets controversial...

VEMAG, representing the country's number plate embossers, believes the DVLA's CEO, Neequaye Kotey, has overlooked a crucial step: consulting with them. They argue that while digitisation is important, a collaborative approach is necessary for a smooth transition.

The Association's Concerns:

VEMAG spokesperson, Jojo Bruce Quansah, expressed skepticism about the DVLA's claims of 154 unauthorised companies operating in the embossment business. They've called on the Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, to investigate this alleged illegal operation within the DVLA itself.

A Potential Job Crisis:

One of the most heated points of contention is the alleged awarding of manufacturing contracts to foreign companies. VEMAG claims this move could leave over 3,000 Ghanaian employees jobless, as the DVLA seems to be sidelining local expertise.

'The DVLA boss is rushing this change without consulting us, and now he's relying on the very people he claims are not useful,' Quansah stated.

Financial Contributions:

VEMAG also highlighted their financial contributions, claiming they've paid GH¢3.6 million annually to the DVLA and have always been law-abiding taxpayers.

A Plea for Collaboration:

VEMAG's main request is for the DVLA to engage with them and find a common path forward. They believe a partnership between local embossers and the DVLA is key to a successful digital transition.

What do you think?

Is the DVLA's digitalisation plan a step in the right direction, or are they overlooking the importance of local collaboration? Should there be more transparency in the process? We want to hear your thoughts! Leave a comment below and join the discussion.
