Is Samsung's Revolutionary Privacy Display Worth the Brightness Trade-Off?
Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked 2026 event was nothing short of a tech spectacle, but one feature stole the show: the Privacy Display on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Despite Samsung’s claims of up to 2,600 nits of brightness for the 6.9-inch AMOLED screen, our lab tests show the S26 Ultra peaks at just 1,806 nits—slightly lower than the S25 Ultra’s 1,860 nits. While this difference is barely perceptible under normal viewing conditions, it becomes more apparent at wider angles, where the S26 Ultra’s screen appears dimmer than its predecessor.
But here’s the real kicker: when the Privacy Display is activated, brightness plummets dramatically. With Maximum Privacy Protection enabled, the screen drops to a mere 586 nits—a staggering 67.6% reduction in light output. This makes the display challenging to view outdoors and even noticeable indoors. It’s a stark trade-off: privacy at the expense of brightness. But unlike third-party screen protectors that permanently dim your display, Samsung’s solution is toggleable, giving users control over their viewing experience.
