So, on Tuesday, when Trump delivers his second-term State of the Union address, many Democrats are taking a different approach. They're planning a boycott and attending a rally called "The People's State of the Union" on the National Mall.
This event, organized by MoveOn and MeidasTouch, will feature Democratic lawmakers and individuals impacted by Trump's policies, including federal workers and immigrants. It will be hosted by liberal commentators Joy Reid and Katie Phang.
Senator Christopher Murphy, who skipped last year's address, explains, "He's made a mockery of the State of the Union, and he doesn't deserve an audience." Senator Chris Van Hollen adds, "We cannot normalize this moment when Trump is marching our country toward fascism."
The boycott breaks tradition, as most Democrats have attended speeches they disagreed with in the past. However, Representative Hakeem Jeffries encourages members to either boycott or remain silent during the speech, avoiding distractions in the House chamber.
Jeffries plans to attend, saying, "We're not going to his house; he's coming to ours." Lawmakers attending the rally include Senators Edward Markey and Tina Smith, and Representatives Becca Balint, Greg Casar, Pramila Jayapal, and Delia Ramirez.
And this is the part most people miss... Another group of lawmakers will walk out of Trump's speech and join the rally. Sara Haghdoosti from MoveOn Civic Action says, "We want to shift the focus from Trump's lies to the stories of people."
