AEW made a bold move by airing footage of the altercation on Dynamite, which fueled a storyline between The Young Bucks and FTR due to FTR's connection with Punk.
Ariel Helwani interviewed AEW President Tony Khan, probing into the CM Punk saga. Helwani questioned Khan about his feelings regarding the situation and whether airing the footage was a response to Punk's earlier interview.
Khan's response was intriguing. He acknowledged a difference in perspective on the events but highlighted the strategic decision, stating, "It's interesting because I do think that I didn't necessarily agree with the description of how it all happened...but also it's a TV show and it did a very strong number."
He also expressed regret that things didn't work out between Punk and AEW. Khan revealed that he had hoped to reconcile and continue their professional relationship around the time Collision started, but it wasn't feasible.
But here's where it gets controversial... Helwani also brought up Punk's comments, where he suggested that Tony Khan allows people to take advantage of him. Khan responded with, "I don't agree with that, but I also think that everyone is entitled to their opinion, and that's feedback, and it's fair if that's how he feels."
And this is the part most people miss... The fallout from the CM Punk situation cast a shadow over AEW, lingering long after the resolution. Punk would later return to WWE, achieving top-star status, winning championships, and even main-eventing WrestleMania this year.
In the years since, AEW has regained its momentum, with many, including Tony Khan, anticipating 2025 to be their best year yet. Khan also noted during the interview that the locker room environment is the best it's been since the lockdown in Jacksonville. It appears both parties have moved on, accepting the past.
